YEAST
trainees continue training at BTVI
YEAST
trainees are now able to complete their skills training at the Bahamas
Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI). On September 18, 2000,
YEAST and BTVI signed an agreement allowing YEAST trainees to attend
BTVI for the purpose of acquiring practical skills training in the
programme of their choice. The transfer may occur either during
the Fall or Spring semester.

"Boot
Camp" builds character
(The
following is a speech that trainee Kerlin King delivered during
the Closing Ceremony of the Character Development Camp held October
1 27, 2000 in James Cistern, Eleuthera, The Bahamas)
This camp
has been extremely hard and tough, let me make that very clear;
but we had our special moments. We understand what the YEAST Institute
and this camp in particular, are trying to accomplish in us young
men.
We realise
that it is helping us to develop self-esteem, self-control, exercise
discipline and help us become exactly who we are. For this, we are
very grateful.
At this
camp, our instructors taught us how to stand on our own two feet
indoors and outdoors. By indoors, I mean that they taught
us how to care for our family and be responsible fathers and husbands
in our homes. By outdoors, I mean that we were taught how to survive
the sometimes harsh conditions of the wilderness and the bush.
They helped
to strengthen us, both physically and mentally. But during the first
week especially, it was tough. At first, many people had what us
young people call a "vibe" that is someone
had something against another, where we didnt like where someone
lived or who his friend was, or just how he carried himself.
However,
as the days and weeks went by we all began to bond together, just
like brothers. We realised that we had to come together because
in life, no man is an island; it is about being community; about
helping one another. No one can survive alone. Mr Lloyd, Mr. Clarke,
Mr. Pitt, Mr. Roker and Mr. Mackey, we want you to know how much
we appreciate what you have done for us, in helping us to become
the young men of which this country can be rightly proud. We hope
that God will bless all of your hearts. We also want to give a special
thanks to Pastor Whyte for the well-balanced meals he prepared.
We hope that God will continue to bless him.
Ladies and
gentlemen, I hope to spread the word that YEAST is a very good choice
for the young men of our society, particularly, those who may have
slipped a bit along the way. I would like to encourage mothers and
fathers to consider the benefits of enrolling their sons or nephews
in such an Institute for it has and is proving extremely beneficial
for us who have completed this camp today.
Open
House 2000
YEAST held its
4th Annual Open House and Craft Fair in December, 2000,
boasting its biggest cash return ever.
Each year,
YEAST holds an Open House, giving family and friends an opportunity
to view and purchase the beautiful arts and crafts the trainees
created during the Personal Development Programme.
Everything from
Christmas wreaths to napkin holders is made each year. The big seller
this year was the candle/flower arrangement. Trainees carved a base
from scrap wood, painted and decorated it with a candle and silk
flowers. Craft teacher, Mrs. Agatha Cartwright plans to increase
ouput for future craft fairs. The next Open House is scheduled for
December 13th, 2001.
